Closed — Fort Fisher State Recreation Area is a day-use park only and does not offer camping facilities. The park is open year-round except Christmas Day. The closest state park with camping is Carolina Beach State Park.

Fort Fisher State Recreation Area is a 287-acre day-use park located on the southern tip of Pleasure Island in New Hanover County, North Carolina. The park features six miles of protected shoreline spanning from the Atlantic Ocean to the Cape Fear River, with lifeguard-protected beaches, primitive trails meandering through salt marshes, and a World War II bunker. The recreation area includes an observation deck, beach access (including four-wheel-drive vehicle access with permit), and proximity to the North Carolina Aquarium at Fort Fisher and Fort Fisher State Historic Site, the location of a major Civil War naval battle. This is a day-use park with no overnight camping facilities.

Directions

Located in New Hanover County five miles south of Carolina Beach. From Wilmington, follow US 421 through the towns of Carolina Beach and Kure Beach, then turn left on Loggerhead Road. The recreation area may also be reached from Brunswick County via the Southport-Fort Fisher ferry.
