Fort Fisher State Recreation Area

Closed

Fort Fisher State Recreation Area is a day-use only facility with no camping. There are no campsites, and overnight stays are not permitted. For camping, the closest option is Carolina Beach State Park.

About

Fort Fisher State Recreation Area sits at the southern end of Pleasure Island, 18 miles south of Wilmington in New Hanover County. This 287-acre coastal park is best known as the only North Carolina state park that permits four-wheel-drive vehicles on the beach, attracting anglers for year-round surf fishing access. The recreation area features both a pedestrian beach open 24 hours and a four-wheel-drive beach section with seasonally varying hours. Visitors can swim, fish, paddle, picnic, and hike the one-mile Basin Trail through maritime forest habitat. The park includes an exhibit room available for educational programs and special events. Important: Fort Fisher is strictly a day-use facility with no campgrounds or overnight accommodations. Campers seeking nearby options should consider Carolina Beach State Park, located a short distance north on the same island.
