Hammocks Beach State Park

Open — The park is currently open for camping. Bear Island camping is open, though the bathhouse is closed and winterized for winter. Beach access may be limited during high tides due to beach erosion; use the path behind campsites when necessary.

About

Located in Onslow County 19 miles southeast of Jacksonville, Hammocks Beach State Park comprises a mainland area and three barrier islands, including the pristine Bear Island. The park is known for its unspoiled beaches and unique camping experience. Bear Island camping is primitive and remote, with 14 family campsites accommodating up to six people each, positioned near the beach and inlet. Access to Bear Island is only available via seasonal passenger ferry service from the mainland, or by canoe, kayak, or private boat, making it a true backcountry experience. The park attracts visitors for its wide open spaces, excellent shelling, and wildlife viewing opportunities. Migratory shorebirds frequent the area, and loggerhead sea turtles nest on the beaches between mid-May and late August. The mainland area features its own campground with more traditional amenities. All campers staying on Bear Island must check in at the visitor center on the mainland to obtain parking permits for overnight parking. Campfires are permitted only in designated areas.
