About

Lake Waccamaw State Park protects one of North Carolina's most remarkable natural features: a Carolina bay lake with an unusually high pH that supports endemic species found nowhere else. The 9,000-acre lake is the largest of the Carolina bays and serves as headwaters for the 150-mile Waccamaw River. The park provides habitat for Venus flytraps, American alligators, and numerous rare aquatic species. The campground offers five primitive hike-in sites nestled beneath mature trees near the lake. Sites are group-oriented, accommodating between 6 and 35 campers depending on location. Each site has picnic tables, fire rings, and charcoal grills. Pit toilets are located nearby but there is no water or electricity at individual sites. All campers must check in at the visitor center before occupying a site and display a parking pass for overnight parking. The park features over 10 miles of hiking trails, two boat ramps, lakeside boardwalks, and a visitor center with exhibits about the lake's unique ecology. Fishing and paddling offer excellent opportunities to explore the lake's diverse aquatic life.
