About
Flossy Bay Dispersed Camp West Site is a primitive dispersed camping area situated on the western shore of Flossy Bay within Flathead National Forest in northwestern Montana. As a dispersed site, it offers free camping in a natural, undeveloped setting without the amenities found at established campgrounds. The site is typical of dispersed camping opportunities throughout the 2.4 million acre Flathead National Forest, where camping is permitted almost everywhere outside of developed campgrounds and day-use areas. Campers choosing this site should be prepared for primitive conditions and complete self-sufficiency. There are no facilities, water sources, trash collection, or restrooms. All visitors must pack out everything they pack in and follow Leave No Trace principles. The maximum stay limit is typically 16 days, though some popular sites near water may have shorter posted limits. The area provides habitat for grizzly bears and black bears, so proper food storage is mandatory under the forest's food storage order. Access and conditions vary significantly by season. During winter months, snow and road conditions may make the site difficult or impossible to reach without appropriate vehicles and equipment. Summer and fall offer the most reliable access, though visitors should always check current conditions before departure. The site's location near water provides scenic views but also means increased attention to bear safety and minimum distance requirements from water sources for camping.
