About
Fitton Guard Station Cabin sits in a scenic high-elevation meadow at 10,600 feet on Burro Creek within the Rio Grande National Forest. This small, renovated historic cabin provides rustic accommodations for up to four people with two bunk beds, a wood-burning cook stove, table, chairs, and a small covered porch. A vault toilet and barn for horses complete the facilities. Visitors must bring their own water or treat natural sources, and firewood can be gathered nearby. The cabin is accessed via a combination lock provided upon reservation confirmation. Access to the cabin is part of the adventure, requiring a 50-inch-width or narrower off-highway vehicle or non-motorized travel by foot or horseback. The cabin is located 6 miles upstream from the lower Burro Creek Trailhead (accessed 12 miles south of Del Norte on County Road 14) or 1.5 miles from the upper trailhead (28 miles from Del Norte via Forest Service Roads 329 and 329.1C). During winter months, access becomes more challenging with potential 6-mile hikes or snowmobile travel. The surrounding landscape features meadows, aspen groves, and spruce-fir forests, with Bennett Peak rising to 13,200 feet to the southeast. The area connects to extensive OHV trail systems used by motorcycles, mountain bikes, hikers, and horseback riders in summer, and snowmobilers and backcountry skiers in winter. Off Cow Camp Cabin, another rental facility, is located 400 yards downstream. Bears frequent the area, requiring proper food storage. Maximum stay is 14 days.
Directions
The cabin is only accessible by 50-inch-width or less vehicles and non-motorized uses such as foot or horseback. From the west side of Del Norte, head south on County Road 14 for 12 miles to the lower Burro Creek Trailhead. The cabin is 6 miles upstream from this trailhead. Alternatively, the upper trailhead is located 28 miles from Del Norte via Forest Service Roads 329 and 329.1C, with the cabin 1.5 miles from this access point.
