About

Stunner Campground sits at 9,700 feet elevation beside the Alamosa River in the Conejos Peak Ranger District of the Rio Grande National Forest, approximately two miles below the top of Stunner Pass. This free, primitive campground offers 5 sites equipped with picnic tables, metal fire rings, and a vault toilet. Adequate parking is available, including spaces suitable for trailers. There is no potable water, so campers must bring their own supply. Firewood in the area is limited. The Alamosa River flows near the campground, though fishing is limited between Stunner Campground and Terrace Reservoir due to naturally acidic water conditions. Big game hunting is available in the surrounding area. The historic ghost town of Stunner lies just east of the campground, a former mining settlement that failed due to nonproducing mines and transportation difficulties. Parts of the town remain on private property. Access to the campground requires traveling on several forest roads from La Jara, including Forest Roads 255, 250, and 380. These high-elevation roads are subject to seasonal closures from March 15 to May 15 and can remain snow-covered into late spring. The campground operates from late May through mid-October, weather permitting.

Directions

From 1/4 mile north of La Jara, CO, take Road 15 west 10.6 miles to Forest Road 255. Turn left onto FR 255 (dirt) and continue 11.4 miles to Forest Road 250. Continue straight on FR 250 for 18.4 miles to the Y intersection with Forest Road 380. Bear right onto FR 380 for 0.4 miles to the campground sign, then turn left and travel 0.3 miles to the campground.
