About

Comstock Campground sits at 9,700 feet elevation in the Rock Creek drainage of Rio Grande National Forest, approximately 18 miles southwest of Monte Vista. This small, primitive campground offers 7 first-come, first-served sites with dead-end spurs ranging from 35 to 40 feet in length. Each site includes a picnic table and fire ring, with a vault toilet available. There is no potable water, and campers must pack out all trash. The campground serves as an excellent basecamp for exploring the surrounding backcountry. The South Fork of Rock Creek provides fishing opportunities (Colorado license required). Trail access includes Alamosa River to Rock Creek Trail 703, North Fork Rock Creek Trail 704, and South Fork Rock Creek Trail 702. Motorcycles are permitted on Trails 702 and 703, while ATVs under 50 inches wide can use Trail 702 to connect to Blowout Pass. This is bear country, so proper food storage is required. Dogs are allowed on leash (6 feet max), but horses are prohibited within the campground. A 14-day camping limit applies. Maneuvering space for large trailers is limited.
