About
Comstock Campground sits at 9,700 feet elevation in the Rock Creek Drainage of the Rio Grande National Forest, approximately 18 miles southwest of Monte Vista. This lightly used campground features 7 first-come, first-served sites, each equipped with a picnic table and fire ring. All sites are dead-end spurs ranging from 35 to 40 feet in length, though maneuvering space for large trailers is somewhat limited. The South Fork of Rock Creek flows nearby and provides fishing opportunities for those with a valid Colorado fishing license. The campground serves as a trailhead for multiple recreational trails, including Alamosa River to Rock Creek Trail 703, North Fork Rock Creek Trail 704, and South Fork Rock Creek Trail 702. Motorcycles are permitted on Trails 702 and 703, while ATVs less than 50 inches wide can access Trail 702, which connects to Blowout Pass. Horses are not allowed within the campground itself. The campground operates on a pack-in, pack-out basis with no trash service or water available. A vault toilet is provided. Access is via County Road R, which becomes Forest Road 28 at the forest boundary. The campground is open year-round but may be inaccessible during winter due to snow levels or spring road closures. Sites cost $10 per night with a 14-day camping limit.
Directions
From Monte Vista, take Colorado Highway 15 south 2 miles. Then take Rock Creek Road (County Road R) 12 miles southwest to the forest boundary where it becomes Forest Road 28. Comstock Campground is about 6 miles southwest of the forest boundary on Road 28.
