About
Mix Lake Campground is a high-elevation Forest Service campground located at 10,000 feet in the Rio Grande National Forest. Situated one mile west of the historic mining town of Platoro in the Conejos River drainage, the campground offers 22 sites with picnic tables and fire rings, vault toilets, potable water, and trash service. The area is a gateway to excellent fishing opportunities at Mix Lake (25 surface acres stocked with Brown, Rainbow, and Brook trout), Platoro Reservoir, Conejos River, Lily Pond, and Kerr Lake. Hiking access includes Lake Fork Trail 716 and Sawmill Gulch Trail, both providing entry into the South San Juan Wilderness. The Mix Lake overlook adjacent to the campground offers scenic vistas of Platoro Reservoir and the surrounding mountains. The campground accommodates RVs and trailers up to 40 feet. Fires are permitted only in metal fire rings and must be completely extinguished before leaving. Dogs are allowed on leashes up to 6 feet. Horses and pack animals are not permitted in the campground. Private land exists in the surrounding area; obtain permission before entering.
Directions
From Monte Vista: Take Highway 17 south 12 miles, then Twelve Mile Road west 12 miles to the forest boundary where it becomes Alamosa-Conejos River Road #250. Follow #250 for 17 miles over Stunner Pass to Mix Lake. From Antonito: Take Highway 17 west 23 miles to Road #250 at Elk Creek, then follow #250 for 23 miles up the Conejos River to Mix Lake.
