About
Mix Lake Campground is located at 10,000 feet elevation in the Conejos River drainage, one mile west of the historic town of Platoro. The campground features 22 sites, each equipped with a picnic table and fire ring. Three vault toilets, drinking water, trash service, and ample parking with trailer spaces are provided. The maximum RV length is 40 feet. The campground serves as an excellent base for exploring the South San Juan Wilderness. Anglers can access multiple fishing opportunities including Mix Lake, Platoro Reservoir, Conejos River, Lily Pond, and Kerr Lake, with populations of brown, rainbow, and brook trout. Nearby trailheads include Lake Fork Trail 716 and Sawmill Gulch Trail for hiking and backpacking adventures. The Mix Lake overlook on-site provides scenic vistas of Platoro Reservoir and surrounding mountains. The area includes private land, so permission must be secured before entering non-Forest Service property. Access to the campground crosses Stunner Pass and may be restricted by snow, with annual seasonal road closures typically in effect from March 15 to May 15.
Directions
From Monte Vista: Take Colorado Highway 17 south 12 miles, then take Twelve Mile Road 12 miles west to the forest boundary where it becomes Alamosa-Conejos River Road #250. Follow #250 for 17 miles up the Alamosa River and over Stunner Pass to Mix Lake. From Antonito: Take Colorado Highway 17 west 23 miles to Alamosa-Conejos River Road #250 at Elk Creek. Follow #250 for 23 miles up the Conejos River to Mix Lake.
