About
Alamosa Campground is a small, primitive campground located along the Alamosa River in the Conejos Region of Rio Grande National Forest, situated 4.5 miles above Terrace Reservoir Dam. This free, no-fee campground offers 5 campsites including one pull-through site, each equipped with a picnic table and fire ring. The campground operates on a first-come, first-served basis with no reservations. The remote location provides access to several recreational opportunities including fishing at nearby Terrace Reservoir and trailhead access to the Alamosa-Rock Creek Trail and Big Lake Trails. The Alamosa Rock Trail #703 begins at the campground and extends 5.4 miles, suitable for motorcycle trail riding, mountain biking, horseback riding, and hiking. Note that naturally acidic water severely limits fishing opportunities in the Alamosa River between Stunner Campground and Terrace Reservoir. This is a pack-in, pack-out campground with no potable water available and no trash service. Restrooms are available on-site. The area can be bear country, so proper food storage is essential. Quiet hours are enforced from 10:00 p.m. to 6:00 a.m. While the campground is open year-round, access may be restricted by snow and seasonal road closures typically from March 15th to May 15th. The location receives light use and offers ample parking, though maneuvering space for large RVs and trailers is limited.
Directions
From Monte Vista, follow Highway 15 south to the junction of Forest Road 250. Turn west and travel approximately 12 miles on FR 250 to the campground. From La Jara, follow Highway 15 west to Centro. Where the road turns right, immediately make a sharp left and follow Forest Road 255 to its junction with FR 250, then follow FR 250 to the campground.
