About

Fitton Guard Station is a historic one-room cabin situated in a high elevation meadow at 10,600 feet along Burro Creek in Rio Grande National Forest. Named in honor of a former Forest Ranger, this rustic rental cabin sleeps four people in two bunk beds and provides basic amenities including a wood-burning cook stove, vault toilet, barn for horses, fire ring, table, chairs, and a small covered porch. No potable water or firewood is provided; visitors must treat natural water sources and gather firewood near the cabin. The cabin is accessible only by 50-inch width or less OHV vehicles or non-motorized travel such as hiking or horseback riding. From Del Norte, the cabin is 6 miles upstream from the lower Burro Creek Trailhead on County Road 14, or 1.5 miles from the upper trailhead via Forest Service Roads 329 and 329.1C. During winter months, access requires a 6-mile hike from the lower trailhead due to snow conditions. The surrounding area features meadows, aspen groves, and spruce-fir forests with Bennett Peak at 13,200 feet visible to the southeast. Recreation opportunities include hunting, hiking, OHV riding, mountain biking, snowmobiling, backcountry skiing, horseback riding, and fishing. The cabin is available for reservation year-round with a 14-day maximum stay. Bears frequent the area, requiring proper food storage. Off Cow Camp Cabin is located 400 yards downstream and is also available for rent.

Directions

The cabin is only accessible by 50-inch width or less OHV vehicles or non-motorized travel. From the west side of Del Norte, head south on County Road 14 for 12 miles to the lower Burro Creek Trailhead. The cabin is 6 miles upstream from this trailhead via Burro Creek OHV Trail #873. The upper trailhead is 28 miles from Del Norte, accessed by Forest Service Roads 329 and 329.1C, with the cabin 1.5 miles from the upper trailhead. Passenger vehicles cannot access the cabin.
