About

Located in the remote Thompson River area of Lolo National Forest, Fishtrap Lake Campground provides a primitive camping experience on a flat bench above scenic Fishtrap Lake. At an elevation of 4,100 feet, the 5-acre campground encompasses 13 first-come, first-served campsites scattered among open, sunny areas with some tree coverage. Each site includes a picnic table and fire ring, with RV pull-through sites available for larger rigs. The campground offers excellent recreational opportunities centered around Fishtrap Lake. Non-motorized boating is permitted on the lake, which is stocked with trout and native trout species. Anglers can fish from shore, wade in the shallows, or use float tubes to access deeper waters using fly, spin, or bait fishing methods. The nearby Fishtrap Lake Trail #1104 provides an easy, relaxing walk through diverse forest types with views of both Fishtrap and Upper Fishtrap lakes, where wildlife such as moose, beavers, osprey, and deer are commonly spotted. This is a pack-in, pack-out campground with limited amenities. A hand pump provides drinking water through September, and vault toilets are available through late October. Access requires navigating narrow Forest Service roads, making this a destination for those seeking a more secluded camping experience. The campground sees light usage, providing a peaceful setting for fishing, hiking, and enjoying the natural surroundings of northwest Montana.
