Fern Springs Day Use Picnic Area
Closed — Closed to all public use until further notice. The gate to the picnic area is locked.
Special Weather Statement issued April 12 at 1:51AM EDT by NWS Greenville-Spartanburg SC
Relative humidity values are expected to fall below 30 percent again this afternoon as winds pick up from the south. Given the dry vegetation, outdoor fires will be able to spread quickly once started. Please refer to your local burn permitting authorities on whether you can burn today. If you do burn, use extreme caution as fires can quickly get out of hand under these conditions.
About
Fern Springs Day Use Picnic Area is a historically significant site within the Chattahoochee-Oconee National Forest, constructed by the Civilian Conservation Corps in the 1930s. The area showcases impressive hand-constructed stone work including pavilions, walkways, bridges, water rills, and stairways that reflect the craftsmanship of the era. These historic structures are eligible for listing on the National Register of Historic Places. The site is nestled in a scenic natural setting cradled by white pines, hemlocks, and old-growth oak trees. A large grassy lawn and rich understory provide habitat for various bird species and wildlife. The combination of historic architecture and natural beauty once made this a peaceful retreat for visitors. The area is currently closed to all public use with the gate locked. Lake Russell Beach and Boat Launch, located approximately 6.5 miles away, offers alternative recreation opportunities including swimming and fishing.
