About
Located along the meandering Suwannee River, Fanning Springs State Park is home to a second-magnitude spring that produces 65 million gallons of crystal-clear, 72-degree water daily. The spring attracts swimmers, snorkelers, and scuba divers year-round with its constant cool temperature and excellent visibility reaching depths of 18 to 21 feet. Musk turtles, bass, mullet, freshwater flounder, bowfin, and manatees during colder months inhabit the spring and river waters. The park offers primitive group camping at a riverside site accommodating up to eight people, with restrooms located 600 feet away and cold-water outdoor showers available. Modern two-bedroom cabins with central heating and cooling, screened porches, and kitchenettes provide comfortable overnight accommodations along the Suwannee River Wilderness Trail. A 0.75-mile nature trail winds through upland mixed hardwood and pine forest with towering 60-foot canopy trees, while a 200-yard boardwalk meanders through cypress swamp with 6-foot-tall cypress knees, ending at an overlook of the Suwannee River where sturgeon can sometimes be seen jumping in summer. The park features picnic pavilions under majestic live oaks, a playground, volleyball court, and canoe/kayak launch for paddlers exploring the 7-mile stretch to Manatee Springs State Park or the broader 200-mile Suwannee River Wilderness Trail.
Directions
Located at 18020 N.W. Highway 19, Fanning Springs, FL. Visitors can enter the park by vehicle from U.S. Highway 19 or by boat from the Suwannee River. The primitive camping area is accessed via canoe launch at the north end of the park.
