About

Falls Creek Trailhead and Campground sits along Montana's Rocky Mountain Front, where the mountains meet the prairie southwest of Augusta. The site features a 60-foot waterfall on Falls Creek and provides access to the Dearborn River. Previously blocked by private ownership, this 442-acre property was acquired by the Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation and transferred to the Helena-Lewis and Clark National Forest in 2019. The area serves as a gateway to the Scapegoat Wilderness and the broader Bob Marshall Wilderness Complex. Trail 229 leads from the trailhead through forest toward a ridge overlooking the waterfall and continues approximately four to five miles into wilderness lands. Dispersed camping is permitted on the north side of Dearborn Canyon Road between the road and river. The Forest Service has been developing recreational improvements at the site, with construction work occurring in 2025. The Dearborn Canyon Road is regularly maintained and plowed during winter, providing year-round vehicle access to the trailhead area.
