Cummings Cabin

Open — Open year-round for reservations via Recreation.gov. Winter access requires skiing or snowshoeing up to one mile from the plowed parking area, as Lower Hogum Creek Road is not regularly plowed.

About

Cummings Cabin stands as a preserved piece of Montana mining history, dating to approximately 1910 when such cabins dotted the Lincoln countryside. Eligible for the National Register of Historic Places, this rustic rental cabin sits tucked into a grassy clearing surrounded by old-growth conifer forest, 8.5 miles east of Lincoln. The cabin accommodates up to five guests with two full beds and one twin bed, and maintains its historic character while providing basic modern amenities including propane lighting and cooking, a wood stove for heat, hand pump water, dishes, silverware, and cleaning supplies. The location offers direct access to diverse recreation opportunities across all seasons. The Lincoln valley is bounded by the Continental Divide Trail to the east, with multiple access points within a half-hour drive. OHV enthusiasts can ride directly from the cabin to the Hogum Creek ATV trail, connecting to Crater Mountain road and the Stemple Pass area. The nearby Blackfoot River headwaters provide excellent fly fishing opportunities. Winter visitors enjoy cross-country skiing from the cabin doorstep and access to over 200 miles of groomed snowmobile trails. During winter months, Lower Hogum Creek Road receives infrequent plowing, requiring visitors to be prepared to ski, snowshoe, or snowmobile up to one mile to reach the cabin from the plowed parking area at the Black Diamond Road junction.

Directions

From Lincoln, Montana, drive east on Highway 200 for approximately 6 miles. Turn left onto Hogum Creek Road and follow to the junction of Black Diamond Road and Lower Hogum Creek Road. Take Lower Hogum Creek Road; the cabin driveway is on the left, marked with a wooden sign and blue ski blazers. Winter visitors should park at the plowed area at the Black Diamond Road junction and ski, snowshoe, or snowmobile the remaining distance.
