About

Located in the Giant Sequoia National Monument within Sequoia National Forest's Hume Lake Ranger District, Eshom Campground offers a remote forested camping experience at 4,800 feet elevation. The facility features 23 multi-family sites spread across two distinct sections along Eshom Creek, which runs adjacent to the campground with many sites bordering the water. The west section comprises two loops with more developed amenities, including potable water spigots throughout and sites 2 through 5 designed for slide-ins and tents. An old road open to foot traffic provides creek access. The east section presents a more rustic experience with irregular parking aprons, stone fire rings without grills, and a spur ending in a loop configuration. Both sections feature vault toilets. A fenced pasture accommodates campers with horses. The campground sits approximately 80 miles northeast of Fresno in a heavily forested area of ponderosa pine, cedar, giant sequoias, and other conifers. Black bears, mule deer, squirrels, and numerous bird species inhabit the area. Trails from the campground lead into the magnificent Redwood Mountain and Whitaker Forest groves of giant sequoias. Kings Canyon National Park entrance is just over an hour away. Access requires navigating approximately 9 miles of unpaved county and forest roads with rough conditions, large potholes, and sharp curves. The final approach on FR 14S75 features large berms requiring careful speed management.

Directions

From Fresno, go east on Highway 180 to Highway 245 (sharp left from 180 West, right from 180 East). Follow to Badger and turn left on Hogback Road. Go 4.5 miles to Whitaker Forest and turn left following signs to Eshom Camp. Continue 4 miles as Whitaker Forest becomes County Road 469 with rough conditions and large potholes. Go another 3.8 miles to a T intersection, turn left onto FR 14S75, and follow signs to the campground. Do not follow GPS down Forest Road 14S45, which is unpaved, requires high clearance, and can be impassable.
