About
Sunset Campground occupies a central location in Kings Canyon National Park, positioned at 6,500 feet elevation in the Grant Grove area. The campground sits in a mixed evergreen forest of sugar pines, incense cedars, white firs, and Giant Sequoias, offering cool nights even during warm summer days. With 158 total sites including both tent and RV sites (maximum 30-foot vehicle length), plus two group sites accommodating 15-30 people each, the campground serves as an excellent base for exploring the park's renowned sequoia groves. Trails accessible from the campground include the one-mile path to the General Grant Tree, known as the Nation's Christmas Tree and the only living memorial to military veterans. Hikers can also reach Ella Falls, a 50-foot waterfall, and Panoramic Point for sweeping views of the High Sierra. The campground is located across from Grant Grove Village, providing convenient access to services. Within an hour's drive, visitors can reach Giant Forest and the General Sherman Tree in Sequoia National Park, or the Cedar Grove area of Kings Canyon. Black bears are active throughout the area, and all food and scented items must be stored in the metal food storage lockers provided at each site. The campground includes flush toilets, potable water (seasonal), and an amphitheater for interpretive programs. Two ADA-accessible sites (026 and 116) feature paved parking, level tent pads, raised grills, and accessible picnic tables.
