Emerson Campground
Closed — Closed for the winter season. Typically open early July through late October, weather permitting. First-come, first-served with no reservations.
About
Emerson Campground is a remote, no-fee campground situated on the east side of the South Warner Wilderness in the Warner Mountain Ranger District of Modoc National Forest. The campground serves dual purposes as both a camping area and the primary staging area for the Emerson Trail, which leads into the wilderness. Access requires navigating a narrow, steep, rough dirt road that keeps visitor numbers low and maintains the area's secluded character. The campsites are mostly shaded and positioned back from the parking area among the trees, providing a quiet forest setting. The campground offers basic amenities with vault toilets but no water or garbage service. Campers must bring all necessary water for drinking, cooking, and washing, as well as extra water for extinguishing campfires. All trash and waste must be packed out. The rustic nature and wilderness proximity make this an ideal base camp for hikers and backpackers exploring the South Warner Wilderness. The campground is managed under a first-come, first-served basis with a 14-day stay limit. Dogs are permitted but must be kept on leash. Wilderness permits are not required for day hikes or overnight trips into the South Warner Wilderness, though a current California Campfire Permit is required for camp stoves or campfires outside developed areas, subject to local fire restrictions.
Directions
From Cedarville, go south approximately 16 miles on County Road 1/Surprise Valley Road. Turn right on County Road 40 and continue approximately 3 miles to the end and the Emerson Campground. Access road is narrow, steep, and rough dirt.
