About
Emerson Campground is a free, primitive campground located on the east side of the South Warner Wilderness in the remote northeastern corner of California. The campground serves as both a camping destination and the staging area for the Emerson Trail, which leads into the wilderness. Shady campsites are set back from the parking area among the trees, offering a secluded atmosphere. Access to Emerson Campground requires navigating a narrow, steep, and rough dirt road that is not recommended for trailers or large motorhomes. The campground operates on a first-come, first-served basis with no reservations and no fee. Facilities are limited to a vault toilet. There is no potable water or garbage service, so campers must bring all water needed for drinking, cooking, washing, and extinguishing campfires. All trash and garbage must be packed out. Stream fishing is available in Emerson Creek at the campground. Dogs are allowed but must be kept on leash. Campfires are permitted with a California Campfire Permit, subject to local fire restrictions. No wilderness permit is required for day hikes or overnight trips into the South Warner Wilderness.
Directions
From Cedarville, go south approximately 16 miles on County Road 1/Surprise Valley Road. Turn right on County Road 40 and continue approximately 3 miles to the end and Emerson Campground. The access road is narrow, steep, and rough dirt.
