About
Pepperdine Campground is a free, primitive campground nestled in the pine forests above Jess Valley on the edge of the South Warner Wilderness in Modoc National Forest. Formerly a combined family and horse camp, the equestrian facilities have since been moved to the adjacent Pepperdine Equestrian Campground, leaving this site as a quiet family camping area. The shaded campsites provide a serene setting at approximately 6,500 feet elevation. The Summit Trail begins here and heads south into the South Warner Wilderness, making this an ideal staging area for day hikes or backpacking trips. No wilderness permits are required, though a California Campfire Permit is needed for any stove, grill, or campfire use outside the developed campground area. Facilities are minimal: one vault toilet and picnic tables are provided, but there is no potable water. Campers must bring all water needed for their stay. The campground operates first-come, first-served with no reservations. Usage is typically light. A 14-day camping limit and 8-person group limit per site apply.
Directions
From Alturas, head east 13 miles on County Road 56 to the Modoc National Forest boundary where the road becomes Forest Service Road 31/Parker Creek Road. Continue 6 miles on Road 31 to the campground entrance road on the right.
