About

Elk Rock State Park sits on over 50,000 acres of public land surrounding Lake Red Rock, Iowa's largest body of water. Named for an unusual rock formation near the south side of the river that once sheltered Native Americans from the Archaic Culture, the park has evolved into a premier destination for both traditional and equestrian camping. The park operates two separate campgrounds to serve different camping styles. The equestrian campground caters specifically to horse enthusiasts with electric and non-electric sites, modern shower facilities, horse stalls, hitching rails, and a riding arena. The non-equestrian campground offers both electric and non-electric sites, a modern shower building, and a dump station. All camping is 100% reservable, and reservations are required. The park features 13 miles of multi-use trails radiating from the equestrian campground, suitable for horseback riding, hiking, mountain biking, and cross-country skiing or snowmobiling in winter. Lake Red Rock offers excellent fishing for bluegill, crappie, largemouth bass, and channel catfish. Two boat ramps near the main entrance and park office provide convenient water access. The Teeter Creek boat ramp area east of State Highway 14 is designated for after-hours fishing between 10:30 p.m. and 4 a.m. The park also features an open shelter available for reservation, located one mile north of the main entrance on Highway 14.
