A barrier beach permit from the RI Coastal Resources Management Council is required for all campers.

About

East Beach State Campground occupies one of Rhode Island's least developed barrier beaches, stretching 3 miles along the Atlantic coast in Charlestown. The campground offers just 10 sites for self-contained RVs, making it one of the more exclusive and primitive state camping experiences in New England. Strict requirements apply: all camping units must be 4-wheel drive vehicles with manufacturer-installed permanent holding tanks for potable water, greywater, and blackwater. Tent camping, tow trailers, and fifth wheels are prohibited. There are no hookups, no potable water, and no dump station on site. Cooking must be done inside camping units as open fires, outdoor grills, and camp stoves are prohibited. The campground provides four Clivus Multrum composting toilets and access to miles of pristine beach for swimming, beachcombing, and wildlife viewing. Piping plovers nest here, and portions of the campground may close during nesting season to protect this federally threatened shorebird. Registered campers receive one complimentary dump station use at Burlingame or Fishermen's Memorial campgrounds.
