About

East Beach State Campground provides a unique specialty camping experience on three miles of undeveloped beachfront along one of Rhode Island's most spectacular barrier beaches. Located in Charlestown on the eastern extension of Quonochontaug Neck, the campground sits between the Atlantic Ocean and Ninigret Pond, adjacent to the Ninigret National Wildlife Refuge. The campground offers 20 campsites divided into two areas of ten sites each, accessible only by 4-wheel drive vehicles on sand trails. This primitive beachfront camping is restricted to self-contained RVs with manufacturer-installed permanent holding tanks for water and waste. Tents, pop-ups, hybrid campers, and tow trailers are not permitted. All campers must obtain a Barrier Beach Permit from the Rhode Island Coastal Resources Management Council (CRMC) prior to arrival, and beach parking fees apply during summer season. Facilities are minimal, reflecting the undeveloped nature of the area. Four Clivus Multrum composting toilets serve the campground, with no utilities, hookups, or dump stations on site. Registered campers may use dump and water fill stations at nearby Burlingame or Fishermen's Memorial State Campgrounds once per stay at no charge. The beach features a small lifeguarded swimming area during peak season, with opportunities for saltwater fishing and beach activities. Part or all of the campground may close during nesting season to protect the federally threatened Piping Plover.
