Special Weather Statement issued May 24 at 2:21AM EDT by NWS Gray ME
* The warm air temperatures later this Holiday weekend in the mid 60s may cause people to underestimate the dangers of the cold water temperatures which are currently only in the mid 50s across Sebago Lake and Lake Winnipesaukee, and in the mid 50s in the regions smaller lakes and rivers. * The cold water temperatures can quickly cause hypothermia to anyone immersed in the water. When the water temperature is below 60 degrees, the average submerged person could loose dexterity within minutes and be unable to accomplish simple tasks. Anyone on small boats, canoes, or kayaks should plan accordingly if recreating this weekend and use extreme caution to avoid this threat. Paddle smart from the start and always wear your life jacket! * Winds will be breezy this afternoon with some gusts up to 25 mph across parts of the area. If boating on large bodies of water, these strong winds can increase the likelihood of overturning your boat, canoe, or kayak due to increased wave heights.
About
Rocky Branch Shelter #1 is a backcountry shelter located along the scenic Rocky Branch River in New Hampshire's White Mountain National Forest, just outside the Presidential-Dry River Wilderness boundary. The shelter accommodates 6-8 people in the lean-to structure and features three additional tent platforms for overflow camping, a fire ring, and a toilet facility. Access is via the Rocky Branch Trail, with the shelter located approximately 2 miles from the south trailhead at the end of Jericho Road, one mile west of the junction of Routes 302 and 16 in Glen. The trail was closed for four years following damage from Tropical Storm Irene in 2011 but reopened in September 2015 after extensive trail work. This is a primitive backcountry site with no potable water, so campers must treat water from the Rocky Branch River or pack in their own supply. As a no-fee, first-come first-served shelter, no reservations are required. Standard White Mountain National Forest backcountry rules apply, including group size limits of 10 people and proper food storage using bear-proof canisters.
Directions
From the junction of Routes 302 and 16 in Glen, NH, head west on Jericho Road for approximately one mile to the road's end at the Rocky Branch Trail south trailhead. The shelter is 2 miles in via the Rocky Branch Trail.
