About

Doheny State Beach Campground is located at California's first state beach, donated for public use in 1931 by oil tycoon Edward L. Doheny. The campground features 121 campsites with a mix of inland and premium beachfront sites, with sites 37 through 94 positioned approximately ten feet from the water's edge. The southern end of the park hosts the camping area while the northern section offers day-use facilities including a five-acre lawn, volleyball courts, and world-renowned surfing beaches memorialized in the Beach Boys' 1963 hit song "Surfin' USA." The campground accommodates both RV and tent camping, though it is a dry campground with no electrical, water, or sewage hookups. Amenities include restrooms with showers, outdoor showers, drinking water, wheelchair-accessible facilities, and an RV dump station. The park offers a visitor center with tide pool displays, five ocean environment aquarium tanks, and educational exhibits open daily from 10:00 AM to 4:00 PM. A paved beachside trail allows for walking, running, and biking, and the Doheny Whale Walk features life-size paintings of marine wildlife along the promenade. The beach provides excellent surf fishing, and bonfire rings are available first-come, first-served throughout the year. Doho Cafe offers beachside dining, and the location is just three miles from the historic San Juan Capistrano Mission and adjacent to Dana Point Harbor.
