About
Deer Group Campground offers an ideal base camp for extended families or large groups exploring the Big Bear Lake area of San Bernardino National Forest. Located in a somewhat secluded stand of mature conifers that provide ample shade, the campground sits at elevation in the San Bernardino Mountains, south of Big Bear Lake. The single group site accommodates up to 40 people and 8 vehicles, making it perfect for family reunions, youth groups, or outdoor clubs. The site is equipped with picnic tables, grills, and a campfire circle for group gatherings. Vault toilets are provided, but campers must bring their own drinking water and pack out all trash. The campground is accessed via rough dirt roads, and high clearance or 4x4 vehicles are strongly recommended. Recreation opportunities abound in the surrounding area. Hiking and mountain biking trails are easily accessible from camp, including the Seven Oaks Trail west of Big Bear Lake Village, which leads to spectacular views of San Gorgonio Peak, the highest point in Southern California. Big Bear Lake itself offers excellent fishing for trout, bluegill, crappie, catfish, and largemouth bass, along with boating opportunities. The Big Bear Discovery Center, located about 10 miles away, provides area information, educational programs, and interpretive trails. Bears are active in the area, requiring proper food storage in appropriate containers.
