About
Jackson Flats is a peaceful group camping facility nestled at 7,500 feet elevation in the San Gabriel Mountains, within Angeles National Forest. Located adjacent to the Grassy Hollow Visitor Center, which hosts nature programs and guided hikes during summer weekends, this campground offers a serene mountain retreat just a short drive from the Los Angeles metropolitan area. The campground features five tent-only group sites set in open grassy spaces among groves of pine and fir trees. Each site is equipped with large picnic tables, campfire circles, grills, and bear-proof food storage lockers. Sites are located approximately 600 feet from the centrally-located parking area, and vehicles may only enter campsites for loading and unloading gear. Potable water is available at all campsites. The high elevation provides comfortable summer temperatures in the low 80s during the day, with cool nights perfect for sleeping under the stars. Outdoor enthusiasts will appreciate the extensive trail network, including short loop trails around the campground and a connector trail to the legendary Pacific Crest Trail. The forest boasts 557 miles of hiking and equestrian trails, with mountain biking permitted on all trails except the Pacific Crest Trail. The area is home to diverse wildlife including the endangered California condor, mountain lions, and various bird species such as the Least Bell's vireo and Southwestern Willow flycatcher. The nearby town of Wrightwood offers restaurants and additional recreation, while the scenic Angeles Crest Highway provides stunning views through varied landscapes.
Directions
From Wrightwood, turn left onto CA-2 W/Angeles Crest Highway and go 6.1 miles. Look for signs and turn right. Drive 1.2 miles past Grassy Hollow Visitor Center and into the campground.
