About
Coldbrook Campground is a year-round destination located at 3,350 feet elevation in the Angeles National Forest along Highway 39. The campground offers 22 shaded campsites positioned at the intersection of Coldbrook and Soldier Creeks on the North Fork of the San Gabriel River. Each site accommodates up to 8 people and 2 vehicles with an additional fee for the second vehicle. Sites are available exclusively on a first-come, first-served basis and tend to fill on summer weekends, though the campground generally sees lighter use than nearby Crystal Lake Recreation Area. The campground provides basic amenities including picnic tables, campfire rings with grills at each site, and vault toilets. While piped water is currently unavailable due to maintenance issues, seasonal stream water is accessible but must be treated before use. Campers should bring sufficient water for all needs including cooking, cleaning, drinking, and fire extinguishing. RVs up to 22 feet are permitted, though no hookups are available. Coldbrook serves as an excellent base for exploring the San Gabriel Mountains, with the Smith Mountain Trailhead located just one-third of a mile from the campground offering a 7-mile round trip summit hike. The popular Bridge to Nowhere trail is a short drive away, and the Upper Bear Creek Trailhead for wilderness backpacking trips can be found roughly a quarter-mile south of the campground entrance. The North Fork of the San Gabriel River, approximately four miles away, is often stocked with rainbow trout during summer months.
