About

Davenport Campground holds a unique place in Forest Service history, having been rebuilt in 2010 to evoke the design of the original 1920s campground. It sits near the site of Squirrel Creek Campground, the very first Forest Service campground in the country, which was destroyed by a flood in 1947. The campground features distinctive Adirondack shelters, a common cooking shelter with stone fireplaces, and hand-crafted log picnic tables that reflect the historic character of early public camping facilities. Nestled at 8,500 feet in the Wet Mountains, the campground occupies a grassy meadow bordered by aspen and spruce trees with Squirrel Creek flowing alongside. The 4.5-mile Squirrel Creek Trail provides access to hiking, mountain biking, horseback riding, and motorcycle trails, while brook trout fishing is available in the creek. Bishop's Castle, a unique medieval-style structure, is located about 2 miles away on Highway 165. This is a walk-in tent-only campground with no RV access. Potable water is available via a hand pump, and two accessible vault toilets serve the facility. A bear closure order requires proper food storage. The campground is approximately 45 minutes from Pueblo and one hour from Colorado Springs.
