About
Southside Campground is a developed campground within the Lake Isabel Recreation Area, situated in the scenic Wet Mountains of the San Isabel National Forest at an elevation of 8,600 feet. The campground features 8 pull-through RV sites shaded by aspen and ponderosa pine trees, with paved roads throughout. Built by the Civilian Conservation Corps in the late 1930s, Lake Isabel is a 40-acre impoundment that sits dramatically against the rocky base of the surrounding mountains. The recreation area offers excellent opportunities for non-motorized boating and fishing, with the lake regularly stocked with brown and brook trout. St. Charles Creek, located close to the campground, provides additional fishing opportunities for brook trout. Outdoor enthusiasts can explore several trails accessible from the area, including the 15-mile Cisneros Trail which leads into the heart of the Wet Mountains through forests and wildflower meadows, and the St. Charles Trail which connects to St. Charles Peak. While designed primarily for RVs under 30 feet in length, tent camping is permitted. The campground does not offer hookups but provides vault toilets, drinking water during the operating season, picnic tables, and campfire grills. Tight turns in the campground prevent vehicles over 30 feet from safely maneuvering. The site is located in a remote area with no cell phone service.
Directions
From Pueblo, drive 25 miles south on Interstate 25 to exit 74. Go west 18 miles on State Highway 165. Turn into the main entrance at Lake Isabel Recreation Area. The campground is the first within the recreation area on the left.
