Crags Campground Complex
Seasonally closed. The campground typically opens mid-July and closes mid-October, dependent on snow and road conditions. Access roads are rough and steep, requiring high-clearance 4WD vehicles.
About
Bighorn Crags Campground provides the primary access point to one of the most spectacular landscapes in the Frank Church River of No Return Wilderness. The area features rugged mountains, numerous alpine lakes, and fascinating hoodoo rock formations that draw backpackers and horseback riders from across the country. The campground has 14 sites equipped with picnic tables and fire grates, along with a separate horse camping area featuring corrals and water troughs for stock users. The campground sits at the end of a challenging access route that requires high-clearance four-wheel-drive vehicles. From North Fork, travel 24 miles west on the Salmon River Road (FR 030), turn south at the Panther Creek confluence and continue 28 miles on FR 055, then turn at Forney townsite and travel approximately 22 miles northwest on FR 112 and 113. RVs and vehicles with trailers are not recommended due to the rough, steep terrain. Facilities include vault toilets and piped drinking water during the operating season. There is no garbage collection, so campers must pack out all trash. The campground operates first-come, first-served with a 14-day stay limit.
