About

Horse Flats Campground is a high-elevation camping destination in the San Gabriel Mountains National Monument, situated at 5,600 feet within Angeles National Forest. The campground offers 26 first-come, first-served campsites surrounded by pine forest with ample shade. Each site includes a picnic table and fire ring, though campers must bring their own water as none is available on-site. True to its name, Horse Flats caters to equestrians with four horse corrals and several hitching posts located on the west side of the campground. The Silver Moccasin National Recreation Trail is accessible from the southwest side of the campground, providing excellent hiking opportunities. Rock climbers and boulderers will find quality granite bouldering areas near Mount Hillyer, approximately a one-mile hike from the campground. Mountain biking trails are also available in the area. The campground is accessible via Santa Clara Divide Road, a narrow mountain road that limits RV access to vehicles 20 feet or shorter. Located about 29 miles from La Cañada along Angeles Crest Highway, the site experiences heavy use during its operating season. Due to its elevation and snow conditions, the campground closes during winter months.

Directions

From Interstate 210 in La Cañada, exit at Angeles Crest Highway (Highway 2) and drive 29 miles to the intersection with Santa Clara Divide Road (3N17) at Three Points. Turn south and drive 3 miles to the campground.
