Cougar Flat Campground is located in a forested mountain setting along the Bumping River, approximately 35 miles northwest of Naches, Washington. The campground offers 12 campsites, including eight standard vehicle-accessible sites and four walk-in tent-only sites, each equipped with picnic tables and campfire rings with grills. The setting provides a secluded camping experience while maintaining proximity to key recreation areas. The campground sits adjacent to the William O. Douglas Wilderness and near Bumping Lake, making it an ideal base camp for hikers, anglers, and outdoor enthusiasts. The American Ridge Trail, accessible from the area, travels 26 miles through towering forests, mountain meadows, and high-elevation lakes before connecting to the Pacific Crest Trail. Bumping Lake offers opportunities for boating, swimming, and fishing. The area is also popular for horseback riding, mountain biking, hunting, and fishing in summer and early fall. In winter months, the area is used for skiing, snowshoeing, and snowmobiling, though the campground itself is closed. The campground provides vault toilets and potable water from a hand pump. Half of the sites are reservable through Recreation.gov, while the remaining sites operate on a first-come, first-served basis. Due to space limitations, trailers are restricted to a maximum length of 20 feet, and horses are not permitted within the campground.

Directions

From Naches, travel west on Highway 12 for 4.4 miles. Continue straight onto Highway 410 W for 27.5 miles. Near milepost 88, turn left onto Bumping River Road (Forest Road 1800). Travel 6 miles to the campground entrance on the left.
