Cottonwood Group Campground is situated in the Colorado Desert portion of Joshua Tree National Park, offering a distinctly different landscape from the iconic boulder formations and Joshua trees found in the park's northern section. The three group tent sites (G01, G02, G03) sit at approximately 3,000 feet elevation amid flat, open desert shrubland. This lower elevation means wildflower season arrives earlier here than elsewhere in the park, typically between February and March depending on winter precipitation. The campground's remote southern location, far from urban light pollution, makes it one of the park's premier stargazing destinations. Each group site features a picnic shelter providing shade, along with access to flush toilets and potable water. Sites accommodate groups of 7-25 people depending on the site, with vehicle limits ranging from 7-11 vehicles per site. Reservations are required year-round via Recreation.gov and can be made up to 6 months in advance. Fire restrictions are in effect annually from June 15 through October 1, during which only gas or propane stoves are permitted. RVs and habitable trailers are prohibited at the group sites.

Directions

From Interstate 10, take the Mecca/Twentynine Palms exit (25 miles east of Indio, California) and follow signs to Joshua Tree National Park. The Cottonwood entrance leads to the campground.
