Cottonwood Group

Open — Open year-round by reservation only through Recreation.gov. Reservations required and can be made same-day or up to 6 months in advance. Fire restrictions prohibit wood and charcoal fires June 15 through October 1.

About

Cottonwood Group Campground is one of three group campgrounds in Joshua Tree National Park and the only one located in the southern section. The facility features three group tent-only sites, each with a picnic shelter providing shade. Situated at 3,000 feet elevation in the Colorado Desert landscape, the campground overlooks flat, open-desert shrubland rather than the rock formations found in the northern park areas. The low elevation and minimal light pollution make this an exceptional location for stargazing, with wide, dark, and uninterrupted views of the night sky. Desert wildflowers bloom earlier here than elsewhere in the park, typically between early February and late March depending on winter precipitation. Several hiking trails depart from the campground, and additional trailheads are within a 1-2 hour drive. The facility provides flush toilets and potable water but no electrical hookups. Fire restrictions prohibit charcoal and wood fires from June 15 through October 1 annually.

Directions

Take Interstate 10 to the Mecca/Twentynine Palms exit, 25 miles east of Indio, California. Follow signs to Joshua Tree National Park. The campground is in the southern section of the park accessed via the Cottonwood entrance.
