About
Carter Meadows Horse Group Campground sits at 5,800 feet elevation on the South Fork of the Salmon River at the southern edge of Klamath National Forest. This specialized facility is designed exclusively for large equestrian groups, accommodating up to 25 people and 25 horses. The site includes seven one-horse corrals, three 2-horse corrals, and three 3-4 horse corrals, along with a gravel parking area, gated entrance, hitch rack, and mounting ramp. Dispersed tent or trailer camping is available within the site. The campground's location provides exceptional access to the Trinity Alps Wilderness and the Pacific Crest Trail, with three trailheads accessible from the site leading to wilderness lakes and extensive trail systems. The partially shaded setting offers a gateway to diverse recreational opportunities including horseback riding, backpacking, and fishing in nearby streams and wilderness lakes. Due to the high elevation, accessibility is determined by snow levels, which may obscure trails well into June. All groups must bring certified weed-free feed for horses, and stock must be held in corrals or the parking area. Wilderness permits are required for overnight trips into the Trinity Alps Wilderness.
