Carter Meadows Campground
The campground is temporarily closed, likely due to seasonal snow conditions at 5,800 feet elevation. Accessibility is determined by snow levels each year, and trails at this elevation may remain snow-covered into June. Contact the Salmon-Scott River Ranger District at (530) 468-5351 to confirm conditions before planning your trip. Reservations are required through Recreation.gov when the site is open.

About
Carter Meadows Horse Group is a reservation-only equestrian campground situated at 5,800 feet elevation at the southern edge of Klamath National Forest. The partially shaded site is designed specifically for horse camping groups, accommodating up to 25 people and 25 horses. Facilities include seven one-horse corrals, three two-horse corrals, and three three-to-four horse corrals, along with a gravel parking area, gated entrance, hitch rack, and mounting ramp. The campground provides direct access to outstanding backcountry riding. It sits adjacent to the Trinity Alps Wilderness and the Pacific Crest Trail, with three trailheads accessible from the site leading to wilderness lakes and extensive trail networks. Campers must bring certified weed-free feed for horses, and grazing is prohibited within or adjacent to the site. Stock must remain confined to corrals or the parking area. Amenities include vault toilets, potable water from faucets, and picnic tables. Campfires are permitted, and campers are advised to buy firewood locally. A wilderness permit is required for overnight trips into the Trinity Alps. Due to the high elevation, accessibility is snow-dependent, and trails may remain snow-covered well into June.
