About

Rock Creek South Trailhead is a primitive dispersed camping area located in the Hyalite-Porcupine-Buffalo Horn Wilderness Study Area of the Custer Gallatin National Forest in Gallatin County, Montana. The site is free to use and provides basic vault toilets but no potable water, electricity, or other developed amenities. Campers should come prepared to be self-sufficient. The trailhead provides access to the wilderness study area, which spans approximately 155,000 acres of the northern Gallatin Range between the Gallatin and Yellowstone Rivers. The terrain features forests and mountains with opportunities for hiking, backpacking, and wildlife viewing. Grizzly and black bears inhabit this ecosystem, so proper food storage and bear awareness are essential. Due to its location at elevation in the Montana mountains, the site is subject to seasonal access limitations based on snow and road conditions. Spring restrictions on stock and mountain bike use may apply during melt conditions, typically from April 1 through June 15.

Directions

From Darby, MT, travel north for 4 miles on Highway 93. Turn west (left) onto Lake Como Road and continue for 4.2 miles. The campground is located on the stretch of road between the beach turnoff and the boat launch turnoff.
