About

Father Dyer Campground is situated in the shade of a lodgepole pine and subalpine fir forest on the eastern shore of Turquoise Lake within San Isabel National Forest. At 9,900 feet elevation, the 26-site campground serves as a popular summer destination for families seeking access to boating, hiking, and fishing. The campground is named after Father John Lewis Dyer, one of the first Methodist ministers to tour Colorado's high-country mining camps, who for 20 years beginning in 1862 travelled the circuit encompassing Alma, Fairplay, and Leadville, regularly skiing over 13,186-foot Mosquito Pass. Each site includes a picnic table, fire ring, and pedestal grill. Vault toilets and trash collection are provided throughout the campground. A foot trail between sites 16 and 17 provides direct access to the lakeshore and connects to the 1.2-mile Turquoise Lake Nature Trail and the 6.4-mile Turquoise Lake Trail running from Sugar Loaf Dam to May Queen Campground. Matchless Boat Ramp is located about two miles south. The nearby Mount Massive Wilderness encompasses 30,540 acres of primitive land including Colorado's second-highest peak at 14,421 feet. Independence Pass, at 12,095 feet, offers a scenic drive with views of the surrounding alpine tundra where the Top of the Rockies National Scenic and Historic Byway crosses the Continental Divide.
