About

Baby Doe Campground is located on the eastern shore of Turquoise Lake within the San Isabel National Forest at an elevation of 9,900 feet. The campground features 50 sites nestled in a shaded lodgepole pine and subalpine fir forest, with several popular sites positioned close to the lakeshore. The setting provides a picturesque base for exploring the Turquoise Lake Recreation Area and the nearby Mount Massive Wilderness Area. The campground serves as an excellent jumping-off point for outdoor recreation. The 1.2-mile Turquoise Lake Nature Trail offers a gentle loop through the forest to the shoreline, connecting to the 6.4-mile Turquoise Lake Trail that parallels the lake from Sugar Loaf Dam to May Queen Campground. On the water, visitors enjoy boating, sailing, canoeing, and fishing for stocked cutthroat, rainbow, brown, and lake trout. A boat ramp is located approximately one mile south of the campground. The campground was named after Elizabeth McCourt, nicknamed Baby Doe, the second wife of Leadville's prominent Silver King Horace Tabor. She became a legendary figure in Colorado mining history, known for taking on the rugged work of a miner in the 19th century. Nearby Independence Pass offers a scenic drive with breathtaking views at 12,095 feet elevation, marking where the Top of the Rockies National Scenic and Historic Byway crosses the Continental Divide.

Directions

From Leadville, drive west on County Road 4 for approximately 3.5 miles, turn right on County Road 9C and follow signs to Baby Doe Campground and the Turquoise Lake Recreation Area.
