About
Caldwell Fields Group Campground is a rustic camping destination in Jefferson National Forest, about 20 minutes from Blacksburg, Virginia. The campground consists of two adjacent grassy fields, George and Milton, which can be reserved separately or together. Each field accommodates groups of up to 50 people with space for 20 vehicles; when combined, the capacity reaches 100 people and 40 vehicles. This is an old-fashioned camping experience with few amenities. Each field has fire rings, picnic tables, and access to a shared vault toilet, but there is no potable water, electricity, hookups, or trash service. Campers must bring their own drinking water and pack out all trash. The campground sits in a narrow valley flanked by National Forest lands with large shade trees providing cover. Craig Creek meanders along the edge of the fields, offering opportunities to splash in cool waters or fish for stocked trout (Virginia fishing license required). Note that the area is within a floodplain with flash flood potential. Cell service is typically unavailable. Amplified music and fireworks are prohibited.
Directions
From Blacksburg (junction of North Main Street and US 460), follow US 460 west for 2.8 miles. Turn right on Craig Creek Road (SR 621) and go 8.8 miles. The road turns to gravel after 4 miles. Caldwell Fields are on the right.
