About

Butte Lake Campground occupies a secluded location at 6,100 feet elevation in the northeastern section of Lassen Volcanic National Park. The campground sits among Ponderosa pines on soft volcanic soils, with several ponds dotting the landscape. Reached via a 6-mile gravel road from Highway 44, this remote facility attracts visitors seeking fewer crowds and abundant recreation opportunities. Butte Lake itself features distinctive black lava flows running into the water, creating rocky shores ideal for exploration by kayak or canoe. The lake is stocked with trout and popular for fishing. Within the campground, hikers will find the trailhead for Cinder Cone Trail, one of the park's most popular hikes that ascends a volcanic dome with panoramic views of the Painted Dunes, Snag Lake, and surrounding volcanic landscape. Additional trails provide access to Bathtub Lake and other backcountry destinations. The campground offers basic amenities appropriate to its remote setting, including vault toilets and potable water during the main season. Food storage lockers protect against wildlife, and a seasonal amphitheater hosts ranger programs. The facility provides an excellent base for exploring the less-visited northern section of Lassen Volcanic National Park, where the junction of the Cascade Mountains, Sierra Nevada, and Great Basin creates diverse habitats supporting over 700 plant species and 250 vertebrate species.
