About

Butte Lake Campground occupies a scenic setting at 6,100 feet elevation in the remote northeastern corner of Lassen Volcanic National Park. The campground sits on soft volcanic soils beneath Ponderosa pines, with several ponds dotting the landscape. Butte Lake itself features a dramatic black lava flow running into it, creating rocky shores worth exploring by kayak or canoe. The campground serves as the trailhead for Cinder Cone Trail, ascending 750 feet to the summit of a volcanic dome with views of the colorful Painted Dunes below. The lake offers excellent trout fishing and non-motorized boating. Nearby destinations include Snag Lake and Bathtub Lake for extended explorations. The facility operates with full services from late May through early September, including potable water and vault toilets. Loop B remains open through mid-October for dry camping without water service. Cell service is spotty to nonexistent, so advance planning and printed reservations are essential.

Directions

From Highway 44, turn south on Butte Lake Road (marked by a park sign on the south side of the highway). Continue 6 miles on the dirt/gravel road to the campground at the end.
