About
Sig Creek Campground offers a quiet basecamp in the Hermosa Creek Special Management Area of San Juan National Forest. The 9 first-come, first-served sites are spread across a south-facing hillside about a quarter mile from the East Fork of Hermosa Creek. Expect minimal shade and a more open feel compared to forested campgrounds in the area. Each site accommodates up to 8 people. The campground is accessible by 2WD vehicles via Hermosa Park Road (Forest Road 578), which follows the historic Scotch Creek Toll Road from the late 1800s. The gravel road continues over Bolam Pass to Highway 145 north of Rico, though the upper section requires 4WD. Hermosa Creek Trailhead is 2 miles past the campground, providing access to an 18-mile mostly downhill single-track trail popular with mountain bikers and hikers. Anglers should note the East Fork of Hermosa Creek is catch-and-release only from the campground upstream to the headwaters, while standard Colorado regulations apply downstream. Amenities are basic: potable water, one vault toilet, and picnic tables. There is no trash service so campers must pack out all garbage. Horse and pack animals are welcome. The area experienced significant flood damage in October 2025, so check current conditions before visiting.
Directions
From Durango, head 39 miles north on Highway 550. Turn into Purgatory Ski Resort and follow Hermosa Park Road (Forest Road 578) west for 6 miles. The road is gravel but accessible by 2WD vehicles.
