About
Sig Creek Campground is a small, peaceful 9-site campground situated on a south-facing hillside in the Hermosa Creek Special Management Area of San Juan National Forest. Located about 1/4 mile from the East Fork of Hermosa Creek, the campground offers basic amenities including vault toilets and potable water during the operating season. The campground's location along Hermosa Park Road (Forest Road 578) places it along the historic route of the Scotch Creek Toll Road, which connected Rico to the Animas Valley in the late 1800s. The access road is suitable for 2WD vehicles, making it accessible to most campers. The south-facing hillside location provides limited shade, so campers should plan accordingly for sun exposure. All sites are available on a first-come, first-served basis with no advance reservations. Each site includes a picnic table and fire pit. The campground operates seasonally, typically closing in fall due to snow and winter conditions at this elevation. The adjacent Lower Hermosa Creek Trailhead provides access to hiking opportunities within the special management area.
Directions
From Durango, head 39 miles north on Highway 550. Turn into Purgatory Ski Resort and follow Hermosa Park Road, Forest Road 578, 6 miles west. Accessible by 2WD vehicles.
