About
Burr Oak Equestrian Camp is a specialized primitive camping facility within Burr Oak State Park, catering exclusively to visitors traveling with horses. Located in the remote Appalachian foothills of southeast Ohio, the campground offers 10 sites positioned along TR-107 near the check-in station. The setting is rustic and secluded, surrounded by wooded hills and valley farmland that characterize this quiet corner of Morgan County. The campground provides basic amenities including pit toilets, picnic tables, and campfire grills at each site. Water is available from nearby day-use area restrooms. Generators are permitted to accommodate campers' needs. The equestrian campground serves as a base for exploring the park's extensive trail system through forested ridges dominated by oak and hickory trees, where wildlife including white-tailed deer, wild turkey, and various waterfowl can be spotted. Burr Oak State Park was established in 1952 following the creation of Burr Oak Lake by the Tom Jenkins Dam. The area's history includes former coal mining operations and frontier towns that once thrived in the Sunday Creek valley. Today, the park blends wilderness character with recreational opportunities, offering equestrians a peaceful destination to camp with their horses while exploring the scenic backcountry of southeast Ohio.
