POWELL COUNTY DISPERSED REC SITES
Open — Open year-round for dispersed camping. Limited to 14 consecutive days per 30-day period.
About
Powell County Dispersed Recreation Sites refer to primitive camping opportunities scattered throughout the Daniel Boone National Forest in Powell County, Kentucky. Dispersed camping allows visitors to camp anywhere in the national forest outside of designated campgrounds, providing a true backcountry experience for those seeking solitude and self-sufficiency. Unlike developed campgrounds, dispersed sites offer no services such as trash removal, water, restrooms, or maintained facilities. Campers must be prepared with all necessary supplies and equipment. Certain restrictions apply to protect natural resources: camping is prohibited within 100 feet of cliff bases or rock shelters, and within 300 feet of developed roads, trails, or water's edge at Cave Run Lake, Laurel River Lake, or Lake Cumberland (except at designated sites). Camping is also prohibited in areas with posted restrictions. The Daniel Boone National Forest limits camping to 14 consecutive days within any 30-day period. Someone must be physically present at the campsite on the first night after setup, and camping gear cannot be left unattended for more than 24 hours. All gear and belongings must be removed upon departure. Dispersed camping is free throughout the forest, except within the Red River Gorge area where fees may apply.
