About
Powell County Dispersed Rec Sites refers to the backcountry and primitive camping opportunities available on Daniel Boone National Forest lands within Powell County, Kentucky. The Red River, which originates in Wolfe County and runs through Powell County before emptying into the Kentucky River, carved the dramatic Red River Gorge landscape that defines much of this area's character. Dispersed camping on the Daniel Boone National Forest means camping outside of designated campgrounds. No services such as trash removal are provided, and few to no facilities like tables or fire pits exist. Campers must be entirely self-sufficient, bringing their own water and packing out all trash. Food and bear attractants must be properly stored in bear-resistant containers, vehicles with solid tops, or suspended properly. The Red River Gorge area within Powell County features world-class rock climbing, hiking, and natural scenery. Popular dispersed camping areas in the broader region include Tunnel Ridge Road, which offers primitive camping areas with vault toilets and parking lots, and Indian Creek Camping Area off Road 23 with creek access for fishing and wading.
Directions
The campground is located near Stanton, Kentucky, situated along the floodplain of the Red River. Access to the area is likely via nearby major routes leading into the city from surrounding areas.
