Boxelder Forks Campground

Closed — Most sites close for the season September 30. Three sites remain available year-round outside the main gate with limited services. No water from approximately October 1 through May 15. No maintenance or snow plowing services during winter months.

Wheeled Vehicles in Wilderness

Topaz timber sale near Sturgis, SD Continues Operations

The Topaz timber sale near Sturgis, SD continues operations.Tethered fuels reduction (a steep slope logging/fuels treatment system that uses equipment tethered to steel cables) is being utilized to perform chipping and mastication operations.  These operations cause flying debris.

Order 015 - Road Use Regulations - Forest Development

Code of Federal Regulations, the following acts are prohibited on all Forest Development Roads under the jurisdiction of the Black Hills National Forest:

About

Boxelder Forks Campground is tucked into the Ponderosa Pines and White Spruce along Boxelder Creek, approximately 1.5 miles west of Nemo, South Dakota. The campground features 14 first-come, first-served campsites with no advance reservations available. Boxelder Creek provides fishing access for Rainbow Trout and Brook Trout just steps from the campsites. The campground serves as an excellent base for both motorized and non-motorized recreation. The Centennial Trail is located just 1 mile east, offering opportunities for hiking, biking, and horseback riding. Dozens of miles of OHV trails originate in the surrounding area, making this a popular destination for off-highway vehicle enthusiasts. Wildlife in the area includes elk, deer, squirrels, and various bird species. During peak season, the campground operates with full services including potable water from a hand pump and vault toilets. Three sites remain accessible year-round outside the main gate with limited services during shoulder season.

Directions

From Rapid City, take South Canyon Road for approximately 7.1 miles to Nemo Road. Proceed on Nemo Road for 11 miles to Nemo, South Dakota. Turn left onto Boxelder Forks Road/Forest Road 140 and continue for approximately 1.7 miles. The campground is on the right.
