About

Sheridan Lake South Campground is the largest campground in Black Hills National Forest, featuring 129 standard nonelectric sites across five spacious loops: Smokey, Chipmunk, Woodpecker, and Rock among them. Located on the south shore of the 375-acre Sheridan Lake, many sites offer direct lake access. The campground provides vault toilets, potable water via hand pumps during summer, fire rings, and picnic tables at each site. The recreational opportunities are extensive. The warm lake supports rainbow and brown trout, northern pike, perch, and bass. A boat ramp and swim beach are accessible from within the campground, with day-use fees waived for registered campers. The Flume Trail (11 miles plus a 3-mile loop), a National Recreation Trail following the historic Rockerville Flume bed, begins at the nearby Calumet Trailhead. The Centennial Trail's Dakota Point Trailhead is also accessible from the northeast side of the lake. Nearby attractions include Mount Rushmore, Custer State Park, Crazy Horse Monument, Jewel Cave (the second longest cave in the world), and Wind Cave National Park.
