About

Apple River Canyon State Park occupies some of the most dramatic terrain in Illinois, where the Apple River has carved deep canyons through limestone and dolomite bedrock in the hilly northwest corner of Jo Daviess County near the Wisconsin border. The Canyon Ridge Campground contains 49 Class C sites spread across a wooded ridgetop setting, offering a primitive camping experience without showers but with essential amenities like vault toilets, potable water, and fire pads. The park features five hiking trails: Pine Ridge, Tower Rock, River Route, Sunset, and the accessible Primrose Trail. Wildlife is abundant, including deer, eagles, hawks, and over 47 bird species. The diverse landscape supports at least 14 fern species and more than 500 herbaceous plant varieties. Anglers can pursue smallmouth bass, sunfish, crappie, and seasonally stocked trout in the Apple River. The separate Walnut Grove Youth Campground provides 6 group sites and remains open for winter camping from November 1 through April 15 when the main campground may see reduced use. Four picnic areas with tables, grills, and accessible facilities line the river, with three shelters available for day use.
