About
Blackfoot Reservoir Campground is managed by the Bureau of Land Management on the southwest end of Blackfoot Reservoir, the second largest reservoir in southeastern Idaho covering 18,000 surface acres when full. The campground offers 16 fully developed campsites, 12 standard campsites, 6 day-use sites, 2 boat ramps, and an RV dump station.
The reservoir provides year-round fishing opportunities for cutthroat trout, rainbow trout, smallmouth bass, and cutbows. Recreation includes motorized and non-motorized boating, swimming, wildlife viewing, and hunting. The Blackfoot River flowing from the reservoir's north side offers 23 miles of exciting float with Class II and III rapids.
Nearly every campsite offers views of the reservoir and surrounding rhyolite domes including China Hat, China Cap, and North Cone mountains, formed by ancient volcanic activity. The area is part of Idaho Birding Trail #29, with Gull Island in the reservoir supporting one of Idaho's largest nesting colonies for American white pelicans, double-crested cormorants, and California gulls. Wildlife such as deer, elk, and moose frequently visit the shoreline. The campground is located on Idaho State Highway 34, the Pioneer Historic Byway, between Soda Springs and Jackson Hole.
