About

Hermit Lake Complex sits at approximately 3,800 feet elevation at the base of Tuckerman Ravine, one of the most iconic alpine destinations in the eastern United States. The complex provides year-round access to mountaineering opportunities on Mt. Washington, including the legendary spring backcountry skiing that draws skiers from across the country when the ravine's steep headwall holds snow into May and June. The complex consists of 5 three-sided Adirondack-style shelters, 3 enclosed four-sided shelters, and 3 tent platforms, accommodating up to 86 campers total. Facilities include flush toilets in summer (outhouses the rest of the year) and a hand pump for water located about 500 feet up the Tuckerman Ravine Trail. In winter, campers must filter or treat water from Cutler River. Emergency supplies and the 10 Essentials are available for purchase at the caretaker cabin when staffed. Camping permits must be purchased in person at the AMC Pinkham Notch Visitor Center on a first-come, first-served basis. Reservations are not accepted for individual campers, though youth and organized groups may reserve by calling ahead. Maximum stay is 7 consecutive nights. The shelters are accessed via a moderately strenuous 2.4-mile hike up the Tuckerman Ravine Trail from the Pinkham Notch parking area.
