About

Bear Campground is a remote, primitive campground situated in the Sawmill Mountain area of the Angeles National Forest, northwest of the town of Lake Hughes. The campground offers seven individual sites, each equipped with a designated picnic table, fire ring, and bear-proof storage locker. Recent improvements through Great American Outdoors Act funds added new fire rings, storage lockers, information boards, and drainage features. This is an extremely primitive campground with no toilets, no trash service, and no potable water. Campers must bring all water for drinking, cooking, and fire extinguishing, and must pack out all trash. The access road (Forest Service Road 7N23) is rough, and a high-clearance 4x4 vehicle is highly recommended. The campground sees light usage except during hunting season when it becomes popular. The campground operates year-round on a first-come, first-served basis. A valid Adventure Pass, America the Beautiful Pass, or equivalent is required in addition to the nightly camping fee. Dogs are allowed but must be kept on leash at all times.
