About

Bass River State Forest, established in 1905 as New Jersey's first state forest, encompasses over 29,000 acres within the Pinelands National Reserve. The campground surrounds Lake Absegami, a 67-acre lake created by the Civilian Conservation Corps in the 1930s. The 176 standard campsites accommodate tents and trailers, each equipped with a fire ring and picnic table. Flush toilets and shower facilities are within walking distance of all sites. Beyond standard campsites, the forest offers diverse overnight options including six group campsites for parties up to 25 people, nine lean-tos on the south shore with hardwood floors and wood-burning stoves, six enclosed shelters, and six cabins with kitchens and bathrooms. The trailer sanitary station operates from March 1 through November 30. Standard campsites remain open year-round, while shelters and cabins operate April 1 through October 31. The surrounding forest provides extensive recreational opportunities including hiking the Batona Trail, swimming at Lake Absegami beach, fishing, and canoeing. The Pine Barrens landscape features unique ecology with pitch pine and Atlantic white cedar forests, cranberry bogs, and diverse wildlife.
