About

Named for the famous Native American Chief Bald Eagle, this 194,602-acre state forest spans five counties (Snyder, Union, Centre, Mifflin, and Clinton) in central Pennsylvania. The terrain features sharp ridges reaching 2,300 feet elevation, mountain streams, and old-growth forest tracts. The forest is managed as a working forest with timber harvesting and is dual certified under FSC and SFI standards. The 45 designated roadside campsites are singular, remote locations along dirt and gravel state forest roads. Sites may be simple pull-offs or have short driveways, and can accommodate tents, small RVs, or trailers. Hike-in roadside campsites are also available, requiring a short walk from designated parking. There are no developed facilities, electric hookups, dump stations, or trash disposal on state forest land. Backpack camping is permitted throughout most of the forest without a permit if staying one night per location. Backpackers may not camp in Natural Areas, within 200 feet of roads, 25 feet of trails, or 100 feet of streams. Reservations can be made up to eleven months in advance through Reserve America, with a seven-night maximum stay.
