Sky Meadows State Park's Backcountry Hike-in Campground offers a true primitive camping experience in Virginia's Blue Ridge foothills. The 19 sites include 15 individual sites (accommodating up to 6 people each), 3 buddy sites, and 2 group sites (Camp Slater for 24 and Camp Washington for 36). Individual sites 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 8, 9, 13, and 15 feature hammock posts. All sites include a 16'x16' tent pad, picnic table, bear-proof food locker, fire pit with cooking grate, and lantern hook. Campers access the sites via a 1-mile hike on Hadow Trail from the overnight parking area, carrying all gear. The campground provides pit toilets, non-potable water, and bear-proof trash receptacles. Firewood is available for $6 per bundle of 10 sticks; outside firewood is prohibited to prevent pest spread. Dead, fallen wood around campsites may also be used. The park offers 22 miles of hiking trails, 10.5 miles of bridle trails, and direct Appalachian Trail access, making it an ideal basecamp for day hikes or a resupply stop for AT thru-hikers. Located in Clarke and Fauquier counties, the park is easily accessible from the DC metro area.

Directions

From the Washington DC area, take I-66 West to Exit 23 (US-17 North/Delaplane). Turn left onto US-17 North and continue approximately 7 miles to the park entrance on the left. For backcountry camping, park at the overnight parking area and hike 1 mile on Hadow Trail to reach the campsites.
